From the end of this month the New Zealand government shall accept visa applications from British citizens over the age of 64. Previously there was no specific retirement age recognised by Immigration NZ, the official body which oversees visa policy in the NZ, and no visas were considered for Brits over the age of 56.
The new category "retirement" is available in two different options one for those who have relatives in the country and another for those who do not. However it is necessary for either to invest in New Zealand, slightly more for the non-relative visa than the relative version. Although both are technically temporary [but easy to renew], the main difference between the two is that the one for those with relatives lasts for four years at a time, whilst the other only lasts for two.
 
However it is strongly advised that anyone considering retiring to New Zealand arrange an adequate Health Insurance Policy, as the system in New Zealand is quite different from that in the UK, and the differences can complexities can be quite troublesome to the uninitiated. So it's best to go with everything sorted out first, before your journey even begins.
